Premium White Copal (Bursera Bipinnata) Mexico, 25 gr

Premium White Copal (Bursera Bipinnata) Mexico, 25 gr

Mexican white copal - pale, brittle resin tears from Bursera bipinnata, the same botanical family (Burseraceae) that produces frankincense in Arabia. The Mexican Burseraceae of the Americas, with a softer aromatic register: sweeter, lemony-piney, lighter on charcoal than its Old World cousins.

The Material

Bursera bipinnata is one of the principal copal-producing trees of Mexico - part of the wider Burseraceae family that also includes Boswellia (frankincense from Arabia and the Horn of Africa), Commiphora (myrrh from Arabia and East Africa), Protium (Amazonian and Mesoamerican copals), and the same Mexican Bursera genus that produces palo santo's near-cousins. The genus has adapted to a wide range of New World habitats - from the dry tropical forests of Mexico to the lowland coastal plains.

White copal (copal blanco in Spanish) is the lightest grade in the Mexican copal tradition: pale cream to translucent white-yellow tears, brittle when handled, with a sweeter and lighter character than the darker copals. The resin has been burned across Mesoamerica since pre-Columbian times - the Mexica, Maya, and Zapotec peoples all incorporated copal into their aromatic and material traditions, and the Spanish colonial period spread its commercial use across the wider Iberian-Atlantic world.

Character on charcoal. White copal opens lemony and bright - sweeter than frankincense, lighter than myrrh, with a piney resinous note that builds gradually as the tear warms. Around three minutes in, the scent settles into soft balsam with a faint floral edge underneath. Lighter room-presence than the Hojari grades; a brighter aromatic register.

Worth knowing

The Burseraceae family connects this Mexican white copal directly to the resins of the southern Arabian Peninsula - the family that gives Oman its frankincense (Boswellia sacra) gives Mexico its copal (Bursera bipinnata), the same botanical lineage adapted to different continents and different aromatic registers. Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica was burning copal in domestic and ceremonial contexts for centuries before European contact; the Spanish colonial period exported the practice across the Atlantic world. The white grade is the brightest and lightest of the Mexican copals - distinguishable from the darker Mexican Black Copal Intenso (Protium grandifolium) and the Peruvian Black Copal (Bursera copallifera) that complete the range. Same family, three different species across three different terroirs.
